my two cents from 20 years with a Zo
By Desert Gypsy
This is my third Zojirushi rice cooker over a twenty year span; the first was passed on as our family grew and we upgraded from a 5 to a 10 cup model, the second is still with my ex, and this third one is my favorite with every bell and whistle imaginable. The other 5 star reviews state many of the things I love about it as far as producing flawless rice, versatile functions, keeping the rice warm, and of course attractive and efficient design so I'll just state what I have personally experienced with this brand of rice cooker over the years:I have used this to cook various kinds of rice, oats, quinoa and even on rare occasions had it stand in as a "crock-pot". Thanks Amazon reviewers for adding your suggestions and recipes for new ways to use the settings for best results on everything from oatmeal to amaranth and even hard boiled eggs!Even though I am usually cooking for one these days and could have gotten by with a three cup model I bought this five and a half cup model; I recommend going with the largest capacity your budget allows which you'll never regret when using the cooker for entertaining. Additionally, when choosing sizes, a really great review I read for a Zo rice cooker gave the following information about the differences between the U.S. standard and Japanese cup sizes:~The cup size that this cooker is refers to is the Japanese "Go" cup size - only 3/4th of the American counterpart; 180ml vs. 240ml.~The capacity is reduced to 2 "Go" cups when cooking brown rice - that's 1.5 American cups.Washing short grain rice is something important I learned from my mother-in-law; takes just a minute. Rinse 2-3 times until mostly clear. Makes a really big difference! The keep warm setting does actually keep the rice "just cooked" perfect, well past 24 hours in my experience. As a busy mom, I tended to be a little forgetful about emptying the bowl and washing the lid so my previous two models saw more than their fair share of rotten rice "soup" after I mistakenly put the unit away with rice still in the bowl. These days I *always* empty the bowl and wash the lid even if I have to toss a little bit of rice, that way I protect my investment.I put this unit away in a lower cupboard in my kitchen and I guess when moving things around something in that same cupboard must have bumped into the front of this unit because it now has a small light crease in the stainless finish. Not a really big deal but be careful where you store it if you want to maintain a pristine exterior.Altitude was mentioned as a possible factor in another review; I've had excellent results in NY as well as here in Utah where it has seen altitudes from 3,500 to 6,000ft.Bottom Line: every single grain always perfect, always tender, always exceptionally tasty, every time. Highly recommended!
