2Started Out Great, But Failed Quickly **SEE UPDATE**
By S. WIlliams
I received this a Christmas gift and couldn't be happier with both the function, and the size, of this Fissler pressure cooker. I've had a more expensive, and still sold, Kuhn Rikon 12-Quart Duromatic Stockpot Pressure Cooker for over a decade now and, while it still works, its showing its age and has some flaws, most distressingly its slow rise to pressure (and the tendency to burn on the bottom before it does) and the noise it makes once it gets there. (I've replaced the gasket on the Kuhn once in those 10 years and use the steam insert to elevate the food, which does help, but both issues make me use it fairly infrequently.)In my use so far, the Fissler solves both of these handily. I had actually just used my Kuhn-Rikon the week before to make a pot roast and, while it eventually turned out OK, that didn't happen before the bottom of the food burned (lending a slight burnt taste to everything else, even after cleaning it out) and it taking at least 45 minutes to get up to pressure ... And then having to make constant heat adjustments to keep it there. And bringing the pressure down was equally slow with the Kuhn, taking another 30 minutes before you could open, or using the cold water method AND manual release. (Which is hot and messy.)The Fissler had none of those issues. It got up to pressure in about 20 minutes, even with a very full load of roast, and stayed there, without adjustments, throughout the cooking time, with no burned bits on the bottom to deal with. It was also totally silent while doing all of this, which I found especially cool. The lid was easy and clear to lock in (big button, green window that's red if it's not properly closed) and the capacity just about perfect for a big batch of soup or that hearty pot roast. (My two-most frequent pressure cooker tasks.) And it opened easily and safely after a mere 10 minute wait. Both the soup and the pot roast turned out perfectly, and I was able to continue cooking the beans off pressure to reduce the broth without any scorching. I also browned the pot roast in the pan before bringing to pressure easily, something I always struggled with in the unevenly heating Kuhn. The lid (sans rubber gasket, which I always wash by hand) and pot were easy to wash in the dishwasher. All in all, I feel like this was a huge upgrade and really got me excited about using my pressure cooker again.SAD UPDATE: Well, perhaps writing the original rave review above jinxed me, because just a day or so after posting it, I went to use this pressure cooker for just the third time since I got it and it wouldn't get up to pressure. After inspecting it more closely, there was a crack, and tiny missing plastic piece (about the thickness of two fingernails), in the top half of the handle that wouldn't allow it to fully seal and, thus, pressure couldn't be achieved, despite the lid-closed indicator showing fully green and SEEMING to click in strongly. Later, when I went to remove the handle to look at it more closely and see if it could be fixed (the Fissler handle removes with one screw and is made to be taken off), a chunk of plastic fell out that had looked intact and OK before removing the handle.I immediately contacted the Marketplace seller (in my case, Wire Whisk) and Fissler and never received any response from Fissler (I emailed them three times in approximately two weeks), and Wire Whisk was, frankly, less than helpful. They told me it was "basically impossible" that the handle was damaged unless I set it on fire (which I didn't) and told me to "contact the manufacturer" ... And that's all the assistance they offered of their own accord. Amazon, as always, stood behind their customer, and I did eventually receive a refund for the returned item. It's totally possible this is a freak thing with this particular unit. I really, REALLY wanted to love this pressure cooker, especially after my first couple uses went so well, but I didn't do anything particularly crazy with it, other than attempt to use a nearly $300 product more than three times, in exactly the manner it was intended. So, my faith in the overall quality of the Fissler unit--at least of the handle--is pretty low right now. I probably would have tried again with a replacement, if I'd heard from Fissler promptly (or at all), and they'd done a warranty exchange/repair that gave me the impression that they stand behind their products. But that wasn't the feeling I got, at all, from either the seller or manufacturer, so I'm going back to the pressure cooker drawing board.I will also add that, whatever issues I have had with the Kuhn Rikon 12-Quart Duromatic Stockpot Pressure Cooker Kuhn Rikon is still standing behind a product now more than a decade old, when I can't even get Fissler to respond at all regarding a product that failed when just a week old. That, to me anyway, speaks volumes.UPDATE 2 (three months later): Well, totally out of the blue, I received a UPS notice from Fissler that they are sending me a replacement handle for this unit. (Perhaps because I posted pictures with this review???) I've contacted them directly, again, to let them know there is no need, since I have long returned the unit. A message they also responded to promptly, saying they had no idea how I'd been overlooked since January. It's great to finally get a response, but very weird how it happened and, at this point, it's not too helpful for me, but I do think it's probably a sign they would help someone else with issues better in the future.

You can tell the quality when you first pick up this pressure cook. It's made from high quality German stainless steel and has been built with great craftsmanship. It cooks quickly and operates with ease. Cleaning is easy too and you can use barkeeper's friend to keep it gleaming. No more shaky top!
