Best Rice Cooker I've Ever Owned
By R. N. Kinnison
First thing I'd like to say is I am not Asian, nor was I born or raised in Asia. This is a review from someone who does not speak Korean nor have a Korean family member to translate (figured that was important to mention because this cooker does not have an English voice mode.)That said, despite the only Korean voice mode, I love this rice cooker and have no regrets about my purchase. My only regret was not knowing before I got it that it does not speak in English so I could have saved several hours trying to figure out how to change it to English mode.... But, I digress...The manual itself is very useful, and there are enough English words on the rice cooker so you can easily figure out what you are doing. There is, I'll admit, a learning curve, but that is not because of the language, but rather because there are so many things this rice cooker can do. I've never seen a kitchen appliance with so many options! They are all useful options, mind you, like how sweet vs how soft you want your rice or autoclean mode or whether you want to turn the voice off or how loud you want the volume to be during the night (so the rice cooker won't make noise and wake someone up). The manual is very helpful in regards to finding out how to do what you are aiming to do. And once you get the basics down, it is quite easy to figure out how to do everything else. There are loads of things to love about this rice cooker, but I'll stick to my top 3: the resultant rice itself, the delay timer, keep warm setting.I eat a hybrid American/Japanese diet. It's a bit hard to explain, but suffice to say I have rice 2-3 times a day. I'm very picky about my rice. Previous rice cookers I've owned have been nice and all, but never gave me that perfect rice I'd get when I sought out a traditional Asian restaurant. To my utter amazement, this rice cooker can make restaurant quality rice just the way I like it. Within its many options for sweet vs soft rice, it has a setting that perfectly suits what I like. Since purchasing this rice cooker, my rice intake pretty much doubled. Before this rice cooker, I was eating rice maybe one to two meals 3 - 5 days a week. Of course the quality of the rice purchased plays a big part, but I'd been eating Tamanishiki and Sukoyaka Genmai for quite some time, and this rice cooker made a huge difference in the taste and consistency.I also love the delay timer. This rice cooker has a built in clock. So, when you use the delay timer, you don't have to count how far in the future you want your rice to cook, and you aren't limited to multiples of an hour or half an hour. You can manually set the exact time you want the rice to start cooking in this Cuckoo. And you can set it in increments of 10 minutes. This is great because (going into the keep warm setting reason) previously, when I needed my rice done at a certain time, I'd have to "catch it" as soon as it finished so I could fluff it and get it out of the rice cooker because the keep warm setting on previous rice cookers would mess it up. This was pretty frustrating because I'd need my rice done so I could take it with me for lunch, so I had to set it the night before. And because I couldn't set it for a specific time, I had to be there for when it beeped that it was finished (and hopefully I didn't count the hours incorrectly). I don't have that problem with the Cuckoo because the timer is convenient and the keep warm setting is fantastic. They advertise that you can keep the rice on keep warm for up to 12 hours, so each night I put in enough rice and water in the Cuckoo and set it to start cooking about half an hour before we get up so the next morning I'll have enough for the entire day. My whole family takes what they want to eat from the cooker throughout the day and I clean the rice cooker and fill it up with rice and water again that night for the subsequent day. It is so convenient and the rice stays fresh and delicious for that whole 12 hours.I'll end by saying I've come to like hearing my Cuckoo greet me in Korean every time I turn it on. I've even learned a few Korean words. Despite my initial frustration at not being able to understand, Korean is a beautiful language, and hearing the Cuckoo speak to me kinda grew on me.I highly recommend this rice cooker. If you purchase it, you will not have any regrets.
